Product safety and you

Commonwealth, state, territory and New Zealand ministers responsible for consumer affairs have agreed on a National Framework for Product Safety in Australia and New Zealand.  The framework marks a co-operative approach to product safety that involves consumers, suppliers and government working together to reduce product-related injuries.

For suppliers

Product suppliers and manufacturers have an obligation to help ensure that only safe products are marketed.  In particular, suppliers can contribute to safe outcomes by:

  • providing clear instructions for proper use. This includes warnings against possible misuses
  • being aware of and meeting industry and mandatory safety standards
  • developing product recall plans and procedures including effective communication strategies to the public (eg. advertisements in papers)
  • incorporating safety into product design
  • developing appropriate safety standards through product improvement
  • implementing a quality assurance program which includes consumer feedback
  • responding quickly to safety concerns that arise.

Product safety and you is a brochure which outlines the ways in which consumers, suppliers and government can contribute effectively to safe product outcomes.
