Commonwealth, state, territory and New Zealand ministers responsible for consumer affairs have agreed on a National Framework for Product Safety in Australia and New Zealand. The framework marks a co-operative approach to product safety that involves consumers, suppliers and government working together to reduce product-related injuries.
For suppliers
Product suppliers and manufacturers have an obligation to help ensure that only safe products are marketed. In particular, suppliers can contribute to safe outcomes by:
providing clear instructions for proper use. This includes warnings against possible misuses
being aware of and meeting industry and mandatory safety standards
developing product recall plans and procedures including effective communication strategies to the public (eg. advertisements in papers)
incorporating safety into product design
developing appropriate safety standards through product improvement
implementing a quality assurance program which includes consumer feedback
responding quickly to safety concerns that arise.
Product safety and you is a brochure which outlines the ways in which consumers, suppliers and government can contribute effectively to safe product outcomes.
