Managing debts

Don't ignore debt problems. Take action before your debts build up.

You don't have to put up with unacceptable debt collection practices, but you should not try and avoid your responsibility to repay your debts. If you owe money, the best thing you can do is try and repay it.

Debt collectors and creditors sometimes do make mistakes. If you disagree with the debt because you think you don't owe the amount claimed, owe a different amount, or have a valid defence, you have a right to dispute it.

If you are having difficulty paying your debts, or you need legal advice about a debt problem, discuss your options with a financial counsellor or community legal centre. There are free services in every state and territory.
