On 5 February 2008, Australia Post provided the ACCC with a draft price notification which proposed an increase in the basic postage rate (BPR) from 50 cents to 55 cents. In this draft notification Australia Post also proposed increases in the prices of other letter services, including large ordinary letters, and small and large pre-sort mail.
The ACCC released an issues paper seeking the views of interested parties on Australia Post’s proposal on 28 February 2008. The ACCC received 9 submissions in response to this issues paper.
On 20 June 2008, the ACCC formed the preliminary view to not object to the price increases in Australia Post’s draft price notification. The ACCC sought interested parties views on this preliminary view. The ACCC received 6 submissions in response.
On 18 July 2008, Australia Post submitted a formal price notification to the ACCC under subsection 95Z(5) of the Trade Practices Act 1974, known as the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 from 1 January 2011. In this price notification, Australia Post sought the same price increases as proposed in its draft price notification.
The ACCC decided to not object to the price increases in Australia Post’s price notification.
