The Water Act 2007 was enacted to make provision for the management of the water resources in the Murray-Darling Basin, and to make provision for other matters of national interest in relation to water and water information. The Water Act 2007 provides for the creation of an independent Murray-Darling Basin Authority with the functions and powers needed to ensure that Basin water resources are managed in an integrated and sustainable way.

providing advice to the Minister for Climate Change and Water on water charge rules
providing advice to the Murray-Darling Basin Authority on water trading rules
monitoring and enforcing compliance with the water market rules and water charge rules.
The aim of these new functions is to ensure greater consistency and transparency in water charging arrangements and that water markets are able to operate freely.
The ACCC does not have any roles under the Water Act 2007 in relation to

Water resources other than Murray-Darling Basin water resources.
