What we do

Under the Water Act 2007 and the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 the ACCC has four main functions:

  • Enforcing rules under the Water Act
  • Monitoring compliance with those rules under the Water Act
  • Providing advice to the minister (currently the Hon, Mr Tony Burke MP, the Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities) as well as the Murray-Darling Basin Authority,
  • Enforcing fair trading legislation, applicable to all businesess including those trading water.

Under the Water Act, the ACCC's role does not relate to:

  • urban water supplies, or
  • water resources outside the Murray-Darling Basin
