Reduced fire risk cigarettes—July 2008

This Regulation Impact Statement provides the justification for a mandatory safety standard under the Trade Practices Act 1974, to establish extinction propensity requirements for cigarettes. When introduced, the requirements prescribed by the proposed regulations will reduce the likelihood of fires being inadvertently caused by smouldering cigarettes. The requirements are based on those already in place in a number of overseas jurisdictions, including Canada and a number of US States.
