On 17 October 2007 the ACCC announced that no formaldehyde had been detected in clothing following testing of a broad range of clothing on the Australian market. The testing was arranged after concerns had been expressed about the potential for clothing in Australia to contain significant levels of formaldehyde.
The ACCC will continue to monitor formaldehyde levels in textiles and work with the clothing and textile industry to help ensure that any residual formaldehyde in these products is below acceptable limits.
Consumer groups and government—interacting and learning workshop
The ACCC hosted a successful adjunct workshop to this year's Consumers International Congress, which was held in Sydney. The ACCC workshop, titled 'Consumer groups and government—interacting and learning', featured speakers from the New Zealand Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Australian Securities and Investment Commission, Consumer Protection Agency of Egypt, National Children's and Youth Council and the Hong Kong Consumer Council.
Participants then worked together to determine and examine appropriate responses, based on the information gathered through the workshop, to a hypothetical consumer protection problem.
