The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission today issued its annual report on telecommunications market indicators.
"This report will assist in assessing the state of telecommunications markets over time," ACCC Commissioner, Mr Ed Willett, said today. "It demonstrates that overall retail revenue earned by large service providers continued to increase in 2005-06."
The market indicator report shows that:
in 2005-06 the five largest service providers earned around $18.1 billion from retail services.
internet and mobile services have each contributed to the continued growth in reported retail revenues, and have offset reductions in fixed-line revenues – this is despite line rental revenues also declining for the first time in 2005-06.
amongst the major five service providers, market shares* remained relatively steady in 2005-06, with Telstra earning around 60 per cent and Optus earning around 26 per cent of reported retail revenues.
Telstra's retail market share* remained strongest in fixed-line services, where in 2005-06 Telstra earned around 75 per cent of reported revenues.
Copies of the report will be available on the ACCC's website.

The ACCC is responsible for overseeing the development of a competitive telecommunications industry within Australia. Under Parts XIB and XIC of the Trade Practices Act 1974, the ACCC is particularly responsible for prevention of anti-competitive conduct in telecommunications markets and administration of the telecommunications-specific access regime.
The ACCC's market indicator report contains revenue, usage and market share information for fixed-line (voice and data) services and mobile telephony voice services supplied by Telstra, Optus, Primus, AAPT and Vodafone. The report includes information provided for the period up to 2005-06.
The reported information is provided by Telstra, Optus, Primus, AAPT and Vodafone under common standards that the ACCC has set for the reporting of regulatory accounting framework (RAF) information.
*It should be noted that, as the RAF relates only to the five largest service providers, the market indicator report only contains data from those five carriers and does not provide a comprehensive overview of market shares and competition in the entire market. Further guidance on the interpretation of the reported data is provided in the report.
