On 15 June 2007 the then Treasurer approved the holding of a price inquiry by the ACCC into the price of unleaded petrol, pursuant to section 95H(2) of Part VIIA of the Trade Practices Act 1974 (the Act).
Matters to be taken into consideration by the inquiry include, but are not restricted to:
the current structure of the industry
the extent of competition at the refinery, wholesale and retail levels, including the role of imports
the determination of prices at each of these levels, including the methodology for determining wholesale prices and
current impediments to efficient petrol pricing and possible methods to address them.
The inquiry is a public inquiry. On 21 September 2007, the then Treasurer agreed to a request from the ACCC for an extension of the reporting date for the inquiry.
The report has been submitted to the Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs.
On 22 June 2007 the ACCC issued a news release with an inquiry notice, which is required under the Act. This provides information about the inquiry and how it will be conducted.
Public hearings will also be held for the purposes of the inquiry. The location and commencement time of these hearings is provided below. Daily programs will be available closer to the date.
