The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is responsible for administering the Trade Practices Act 1974. A key objective of the Act is to prevent anti-competitive conduct and to encourage competition and efficiency in business. The primary aim of trade practices regulation is to create greater choice for consumers in price, quality and service.
However, in certain circumstances the ACCC can grant immunity from legal action for anti-competitive conduct. Businesses may obtain immunity by applying for an 'authorisation' or submitting a 'notification' with the ACCC.
