ACCC issues cartels publication for small business at COSBOA conference
A guide for small business about identifying and avoiding involvement in, or being a victim of, cartel behaviour was launched at the annual COSBOA policy conference in Canberra today by an Australian Competition and Consumer Commissioner, Mr John Martin.
In presenting an update of recent ACCC small business initiatives, Mr Martin acknowledged COSBOA's ongoing support for a competitive market environment.
"Small business organisations such as those represented here today play an essential link between the ACCC and small business operators throughout the country", he said.
Cartels – What Small Businesses Need to Know assists businesses to avoid becoming victims of cartel conduct and provide guidance about what to do if they have suspicions about cartels during their business dealings.
The publication also provides information about:
the behaviour that constitutes a cartel
warning signs in the procurement process
what to do if you suspect a cartel, and
the penalties attached to cartel conduct.
"Cartels can affect all businesses large and small. With the assistance of businesses to detect cartel behaviour, the ACCC is better able to identify and prosecute those involved in cartels", he said.
The publication also outlines how the ACCC's Immunity Policy for Cartel Conduct may apply to those who may be involved in a cartel.
Cartels – What Small Businesses Need to Know is available from the ACCC website and by contacting the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 302 502.
The publication is a part of a series informing different sectors of business and government about their rights and obligations under the Trade Practices Act 1974. These publications are also available via the website or the Infocentre.
