Junk faxes

Published: 7 Oct, 2005

Some unsolicited faxes can even be scams!

When unsolicited faxes offer 'fax back' services, it can be very costly as they often use premium 1900 numbers.
These faxes usually target businesses with offers of directory entries, catalogues of goods and services as well as the usual competitions, petitions and other 'amazing offers'.

Charged at around $6.00 per minute these fax-back calls can result in hefty, unwanted phone bills. The fax-back call is usually drawn out so that the call charge can range from $20 to $50 or more.

If you are interested, research the product first—a cheaper option may be available. Also always note the final cost of the call, any contact and fine details in the fax.

If the fax refers to a website service, check it out first. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the service good value?
  • Will anyone go to this site?
  • Do all the contact details match up with the fax?

Remember—you do not have to reply to such faxes.

If you are concerned, report the fax to:

  • the ACCC Infocentre on 1300 302 502
  • Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman on 1800 062 058
  • Telephone Information Services Standards Council (TISSC) at www.190complaints.com.au
  • the office of fair trading in your state or territory.
