Money for nothing

Published: 12 May, 2005

Watch out for recent spam emails that claim—'you have just been sent money…!'

These emails look professional, sound convincing and the linked website looks official.
BUT do not be fooled by such unexpected windfalls.

Do not be taken in by:

  • being told an unexplained sum of money needs to be transferred into your account
  • hard luck or exotic stories telling you that you can share in hidden millions of dollars
  • emails asking for bank account details, customer updates and other similar requests for personal information
  • job offers where no qualifications are needed, just a bank account for money transfers.

Remember

NEVER provide personal details via emails or links from emails—if you are unsure double check with the company/institution

NEVER follow the links in unknown/spam emails—these could lead to unwanted viruses or spyware downloading onto your computer.

What to do about such emails

  • Ensure that you have up-to-date anti-virus protection and firewalls on your computer. You could also consider a spam filter.
  • If you want to report the email you may wish to keep it in case it is needed, otherwise
    Delete! Delete! Delete!
