Amendment to the product safety standard for toys for under 3 three year olds
The mandatory standard for toys for children 36 months and under recently underwent a minor amendment by Consumer Protection Notice No. 1 of 2005.
The mandatory standard refers to Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS ISO 8124.1:2002 Safety of toys, Part 1 and is based on that standard with variations. The amendment now allows the exemptions referred to in clause 4.4.1. These exemptions are similar to those set out in Australian Standard AS 1647.2-1992 Children's toys, which is the earlier standard that will cease to have effect at the end of June 2005. While the exemptions are similar to those in the earlier standard, the one exception is that fibre filled toys will now be required to comply with the relevant test.
