1.3 million broadband services connected: ACCC

The take up of broadband services is at 1.3 million, according to the latest Australian Competition and Consumer Commission Snapshot of Broadband Deployment issued today.

"The report shows that as at the end of September 2004, there were 1,310,300 broadband services connected across Australia", ACCC Chairman, Mr Graeme Samuel, said.

"699,500 services were connected over the past 12 months", he said. "This represents an increase of 114.5 per cent on the September 2003 figure of 610,800".

Background

The report details the deployment of broadband services throughout Australia as at
30 September 2004 and is based on data provided by major carriers of broadband services. The report includes aggregated data in relation to the availability of broadband services and gives estimated numbers of services in operation in respect of cable, satellite, ADSL, other DSL and miscellaneous offerings.

Main findings:

  • as at September 2004 total broadband take-up was 1,310,300
    - Broadband take-up increased by 262,500 in Q3 2004 – the largest quarterly increase since the inception of the survey
    - The take-up of DSL services increased by 211,200
  • broadband take-up has increased by 699,500, or 114.5 per cent, from the
    September 2003 figure of 610,800
  • on a quarterly basis, broadband growth remained steady at 25.1 per cent
    in Q3 2004 (26.3 per cent growth was recorded in Q2 2004)
  • broadband growth was higher than for the same quarter last year
    (18.2 per cent growth was recorded in Q2 2003)
