Medical indemnity insurance

On 23 October 2002 the Prime Minister announced a package of reforms to address the issue of rising medical indemnity insurance premiums. As part of this package, the Prime Minister announced that the ACCC would monitor medical indemnity insurance premiums on an annual basis to determine whether they are "actuarially and commercially justified". The ACCC's monitoring role commenced on 1 January 2003.

On 16 March 2005 the Australian Government asked the ACCC to extend its monitoring to examine, to the extent possible, the actuarial and commercial justification of premiums within each jurisdiction in more detail.

On 29 May 2006 the Australian Government requested the ACCC to continue to examine the actuarial and commercial justification of medical indemnity premiums, including within jurisdictions, for a further three years.  The ACCC was also requested to extend its monitoring to include Invivo, a corporate authorised representative of QBE Insurance (Australia) Limited.

The sixth and final ACCC report requested by the Australian Government arising from this monitoring role was published in April 2009.
