ACCC says questions to be answered on McDonald's

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission considers there are still serious questions to be answered over national fast food chain McDonald's Australia Ltd's 'McMatch and Win' promotion.

"The ACCC has now itself received more than 200 complaints, plus those forwarded on from State/Territory fair trading and gaming offices and, indeed, the media," ACCC Chairman, Professor Allan Fels, said today.

"Information collected by the ACCC shows credible claims by consumers that they have obtained winning stickers in the current competition and not from last year's.

"The ACCC has sought an explanation from McDonald's particularly given the number and spread of complaints about the promotion.

"McDonald's has provided a copy of the report by Mr Trevor Morling, a former Federal Court judge, who has conducted an internal review on behalf of McDonald's into the matter. The ACCC will consider that report.

"The ACCC will require a clear explanation which can address the apparently credible and compelling evidence of consumers.

"In the absence of a satisfactory explanation, the ACCC will consider its options in regard to this matter, including court action".
