The Department of Education Services, as a department within the Education portfolio, offers a wide range of services administered through four main offices. The Department of Education Services was established in July 1996 under Section 35 of the Public Sector Management Act 1994 as a department of the Public Service. The Department was initially created through the amalgamation of several education agencies and areas of responsibility including higher education, non-government education and international education, the Country High School Hostels Authority, the Public Education Endowment Trust and several newly created Ministerial Councils. Since the Department was first established there has been a number of amalgamation proposals between agencies within the education and training portfolio and some rationalisation of responsibilities and resources. In December 2005, Executive Council approved the transfer of responsibility of the Office of the Training Accreditation Council from the Department of Education and Training to the Department of Education Services.
