ACT Civil And Administrative Tribunal (ACAT)

Description

The ACAT commenced operating on 2nd February 2009. It was established by the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal Act 2008 ("The ACAT Act"). The ACAT Act's legislative framework gives ACAT jurisdiction over some 13 previously independent tribunals and the actions of various regulatory bodies when acting as a tribunal. Amonst the previous entities was the Residential Tenancies Tribunal ("RTT") which existed under the Residential Tenancies Act 1997. ACAT hears and determines disputes between residential landlords and tenants, using the law of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 and the procedures of the ACAT Act. The RTT ceased to exist on 2nd February 2009, and then extant matters were legislatively transferred to the new ACAT jurisdiction.
