Description
The Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) is responsible for ensuring that Australia will continue to develop world-class communications and information technology that will build on the creativity of our people and the opportunities provided by new technologies, to enrich the economic and social wellbeing of all Australians. DBCDE is working toward a better future for all Australians and developing a world-class Australian communications and information technology sector.
In the area of communications and technology the Department provides resources and news about telephone, Internet, broadband and ICT services for consumers and for business: funding, policy, legislation, statistics, reviews, online security and contacts for industry bodies.
The Department is also responsible for policy and legislation regulating radio and television broadcasting and Internet services, including research, guidelines and reviews and develops policies and regulations for the postal industry and information about the history and administration of Australia Post.
The Department was formally the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA). The arts responsibilities were transferred to the Department of Environment, Heritage Water and the Arts (DEHWA) following the 2007 Federal election.
