RACS application for authorisation

After a two year ACCC investigation, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (the College) applied for authorisation for its surgical training program and its process for assessing overseas-trained surgeons. The ACCC’s investigation was focused on allegations that the College’s processes restrict entry to advanced medical training in breach of the Act. 

A final determination authorising the College’s training and assessment processes, subject to a range of conditions, was released on 30 June 2003. The Commission granted authorisation to the college's processes for selecting, training and examining surgical trainees for six years. Authorisation was granted to the College's processes for accrediting hospitals and hospital training posts and assessing overseas-trained surgeons for four years. This determination also indicated that the ACCC is considering its approach to other specialist medical colleges.
