Inquiry or complaint

When a product or service you’ve paid for isn’t right, it’s important to go back to the business and ask them to fix the problem.

You may be entitled to a repair, replacement or refund, but this depends on whether the product or service has a major problem.

Where the problem is not a major problem, the business can choose to give you a repair, replacement or refund for goods or fix the problem with the service.

If the business chooses to repair the product or fix the problem with the service, the business must carry this out within a reasonable time.

For a major problem, you can choose whether you get a replacement or refund for goods and compensation or a refund for services.

There is no law stating businesses must give exchanges or refunds if you change your mind. Some do, but only as an extra service to their customers. You cannot expect this from all businesses.

It is against the law for businesses to tell you or show signs stating that they do not give refunds under any circumstances.

If you have contacted a business and are unable to get the problem fixed:

Making an inquiry or complaint can:

  • help you to resolve your problem
  • alert the ACCC and state and territory consumer protection agencies about businesses that are breaking the law.
